Faculty Senate
A faculty senate is the representative body of the college with legislative authority on all matters pertaining to the educational interests of the college and all educational matters that concern the faculty members. The faculty senate is also recognized by the college as an advisory and consultative body to the Dean on all matters that may affect the attainment of the college’s educational objectives. The members of the faculty senate consist of all faculty. Each faculty senator serves as a liaison between the governing body of the college and the faculty constituency that it represents. The senators meet on a regular basis to deliberate on/make recommendations for academic development. Faculty senate is a channel of communications between and among faculty and the Dean.
The general purpose of the Faculty Senate within U of M – Helena is to facilitate faculty participation in the establishment of college policies. Such policies shape the purpose and character of the institution, and define its future growth. These policies once established need to be under constant scrutiny if they are to remain useful. To provide for this continuing effort, a structure of committees must be created by the Faculty Senate, responsive to that body and functioning through the Senate to the faculty.
