Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend Continuing Education classes?

Helena College Continuing Education classes are open to everyone. Students under 18 will be permitted only with prior consent of the parent, instructor and staff.

Do I need to register for courses in advance?

Yes, and the sooner the better! Many of our classes have a minimum number of participants in order to run, and we need to be able to to give roster numbers to the instructor as far in advance as possible. Some last-minute registrations are possible, but if we have not met the minimum number two to three days before the start of the class, we may have to cancel.

What are my options for non-credit online classes?

Continuing Education offers:

Education to Go has over 300 classes to choose from. You may browse class syllabi and lesson plans before committing to any class. A new section of each class starts the second Wednesday of each month. Classes run for 6 weeks, with a two-week grace period at the end. Each class consists of 12 lessons or approximately 24 hours of instruction. Registration and payment are due by the class start date, then students will be given instructions on how to set-up their online password for the class.

Ed2Go Career Training (formerly Gatlin Education) offers in-depth career training and certificate preparation programs which are available for immediate registration— start whenever you want. All books and materials are included in the price and will be sent to you upon registration. Financing is available through Gatlin Education. Visit the Gatlin website for a course outline and class demonstration.

Helena College Exclusive Online Courses are designed by our instructors to fill a need in our local and statewide communities. We currently offer courses in the fields of Mental Heathcare and Water Resources.

Not sure which online class is right for you? The Continuing Education staff will be happy to assist you and share the insight learned from students who have taken these classes. Call 406-447-6945 or e-mail lannertm@umhelena.edu

If we receive your registration in the mail or by fax, someone from the Continuing Education office will call or email to confirm your registration. You will only be notified if a class is cancelled.

Can I get grades, clock hours or CEUs for my class?

Grades are not given out for Helena College Continuing Education Lifelong Learning classes. These classes are non-credit. Clock hours, CEUs, and letters of completion can be arranged for most of the lifelong learning classes (including online classes). Please contact the Continuing Education staff prior to the start of the class for details.

To whom do I pay the material fee?

Your class description indicates if the class has a material fee and how it is to be paid. Some material fees are paid at the time of registration and most are paid directly to the instructor at the first of class. If you have any questions, please contact the Continuing Education staff at 406-447-6945.

What do I need to bring to class?

Bring something to take notes, and an attitude open to fun and learning! When you register, you will be informed of any other materials you will need.

Why do classes get cancelled?

If a class does not meet minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled 48 hours prior to the start. If you are interested in a class, please call to register at least three days in advance. Encourage your friends to take the class with you! Unfortunately, people often call at the last minute after a class has been cancelled and everyone is disappointed. Instructors need to prepare and sometimes purchase materials for their classes. It is important to give them at least 2 days lead time.

If your class is cancelled, Continuing Education staff will contact you by phone. Please make sure we have all your current contact information. If we cancel the class you will receive a 100% refund or will be given the option to transfer your registration to another class. You can expect to receive your refund in the mail within two weeks.

What if I can't attend a class for which I am registered?

Please contact the Continuing Education office as soon as possible. If you cancel 3 or more business days before the first class meets, we will refund your registration, but a 10% processing fee may be withheld. If you choose to transfer, the processing fee will be waived. Class and material fees cannot be refunded after the first session of a course has started.

What about parking?

Parking permits are required if you choose to park on campus during weekdays and evenings. Parking permits will be sent with your email confirmation, or will be given out at the first class.

Where do classes meet?

Classes are held in a variety of classrooms on both our Donaldson Campus, 1115 North Roberts St. and our Airport Campus at 2300 Airport Road. You will be notified of your class location upon registration.

Where is Helena College located?

Please click for directions to our Donaldson Campus, our Airport Campus, or call us at 406-447-6945.

Are your class rooms handicapped-accessible?

Helena College University of Montana is committed to making its classes accessible to members of the disabled community. Elevators are available for classes offered upstairs and downstairs at both campuses. Handicap parking is also available with a valid permit. Helena College parking permits are still required for handicap parking.

What happens in case of bad weather/emergencies?

If classes are cancelled due to campus closure, inclement weather, or instructor emergency, the Continuing Education staff or instructor will notify you. It is important to have all of your contact information on file accurate.

Can I purchase gift certificates?

Yes, this is a great way to give the gift of lifelong learning! Purchase a gift certificate for a specific class or for a dollar amount that can be applied to a class of the recipient's choice. Gift certificates are available in the Continuing Education office at 406-447-6945.
