Career Planning

Job Choices

The Career Services offers several tools for career planning.

The Career Services coordinator and the Helena College librarian are eager to assist students in locating books, videos, and electronic resources for career exploration. Drop in any time for personalized asssistance! Also, try the Bureau of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook at www.bls.gov/oco/ for comprehensive information on employment trends and a comprehensive A-Z index of information on countless careers.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of two assessment tools, the Montana Career Information System(MCIS) and the Kuder Occupational Information Survey. The assessments are fun and may be completed from any computer with Internet access. Both tools allow users to determine their best careers based on interests.

Counseling and Advising

Students should begin career planning early and take an active role in determining their own success. Career Services encourages students to obtain internships or other on-the-job training to supplement their education. Placement in one’s field upon graduation is not guaranteed. Factors such as the economy, occupational demand, student aptitudes, and academic records may affect one’s ability to obtain employment.

Career Services offers many resources to help students in the quest for a great career. All students and alumni should register for free email alerts of opportunities in their fields. Career Services also maintains a database of employers who have listed positions with Career Services in the past.

Graduate Placement Report

Helena College collects information annually on the job placement and wages of our graduates. Career Services makes many attempts to contact recipients. However, overall response rates are typically below 70%.

While graduate surveys offer good clues about student outcomes, interested parties are encouraged to investigate additional resources to understand the employment outlook in their industries. The Montana Bureau of Labor and Industry’s Research and Analysis Bureau web site at www.ourfactsyourfuture.org offers excellent information on employment trends.
